The Floods in Iowa

As a native Iowan who has 2 kids, my mother and a huge extended family in the areas directly affected by the flooding, I have been pretty preoccupied with getting the most up-to-date and accurate news I could find during this past week. I have to give a million thanks of gratitude and appreciation to the Cedar Rapids television station, KCRG, for providing Iowans and people far away like me with live, streaming coverage on the internet. I am so very grateful for their decision to stay on the air and be of service to so many, for so long. Thank you, KCRG!

With that said, people that know me have been asking about how to help. There are the usual emergency responders, such as the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, and I'll leave it up to you to decide where to give. I thought I'd provide a few links that are being given out now, where there will be opportunities to give a bit more locally or actually go and volunteer. These sites are also providing information to the flood victims, so they are constantly updating their information. I will add to this list in another posting, as information becomes available to me.

I know that there are a group of Iowans in New York City who are already planning on coming together this week to raise funds for the cause. I'll keep you posted on that after our first meeting.

Here are some other possibilities:

For the area known as the Corridor (the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area) go to:
CorridorRecovery

The Flood 2008 Fund at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation

To assist The University of Iowa, go to: The University of Iowa Foundation (or) Give to Iowa

This is Wendy from the American Red Cross. Thank you for your post.

We at the Red Cross are keeping an online newsroom solely dedicated to news, photos, audio clips, and tactical information about the flooding throughout the central US.

that's tragic really. we too in the philippines years ago suffered from flasfloods which were blamed to denuded forests. i wonder why the government had not done something about the riverbanks when this is expected during heavy rains? i know you can recover fast from this tragedy.

Thank you, everyone for your concerns. This flood is from a combination of factors: not only from heavy rains, but also because of extra heavy snowfall in the winter. It really has gone beyond what anyone could ever have imagined or planned for, so my sense is that it really isn't a matter of government negligence (at least in eastern Iowa that is the case).

From the feedback I am getting from my family and friends and seeing on the internet from local areas, the state of Iowa, the University of Iowa and local city governments have done an excellent job of responding to this disaster. But what makes the recovery and coping even stronger is with the people of Iowa--they are a community and together they will heal.
